Lake Como from the water: all the water sports to try

For me, Lake Como is not just a postcard-perfect view: it’s a natural playground. Every day here can turn into an on-the-water adventure, whether you’re a curious beginner or an adrenaline-seeker looking for your next thrill!!

Sailing: the lake as locals live it

1
Where: Dervio, Bellano, Colico
Why: The steady wind and the lake’s deep waters make sailing one of the most authentic sports to try on Lake Como. Whether it’s a beginner lesson or an independent outing for experienced sailors, gliding quietly with mountains all around is a feeling that’s hard to put into words.

Local tips:

  • In Dervio you’ll find long-established sailing schools such as Centro Vela Dervio, with courses for adults and children.
  • In Bellano you can also book sailing tours, often with an aperitif on board at sunset.
  • If you’re already experienced, you can rent boats without a skipper (a boating licence is required).
  • The best wind for sailing? The Breva, which rises between 1pm and 4pm: perfect!

Windsurfing & kitesurfing: where the wind rules

The Breva wind makes Lake Como ideal for windsurfing and kitesurfing
The Breva wind makes the lake perfect for windsurfing and kitesurfing
Where: Upper Lake Como, between Dervio, Colico and Cremia
Why: In this area the Breva, a reliable thermal windkicks in on most summer afternoons. It’s ideal for learning — and even better if you already have experience.

Local tips:

  • In Colico you’ll find excellent schools such as KTS40 and Tabo Surf Center.
  • In Dervio there are also beginner courses and safe spots to start out.
  • Bring reef shoes or neoprene booties: the lakebed is rocky.

Kayak & canoe: paddling between villages and silence

3
Where: Anywhere — but the stretches between Varenna, Bellagio and Pescallo are especially stunning
Why: It’s the best way to discover hidden coves, glide past historic villas and enjoy the lake at a slower pace.

Local tips:

  • Bellano offers kayak rentals and small guided tours.
  • Rent early in the morning: flat water, very few motorboats.
  • Bring a dry bag for your phone and documents.

Waterskiing & wakeboarding: pure adrenaline

4
Waterskiing: pure fun on Lake Como
Waterskiing — pure fun!
Where: Tremezzina, Argegno, Bellagio
Why: Fancy a proper rush? Lake Como has several schools and centres where you can learn (or level up) safely.

Local tips:

  • Try Lake Como Watersports or JRC Wakeboard School near Menaggio.
  • Book ahead in high season.
  • No experience needed: you might be standing up in just 15 minutes!

Snorkelling: little discoveries beneath the surface

5
Where: Lezzeno, Piona, and the cliffs of Bellano
Why: Clear water and rocky bottoms: no coral reef, but you’ll spot fish, stones and submerged relics.

Local tips:

  • Great with children too, in shallow water.
  • Use a panoramic mask and short fins.
  • Avoid areas busy with boats.
"Experience Lake Como with your body, not just your eyes. The water tells stories the land can’t reveal. I’ll see you on the waves! And if you’d like to stay, I recommend basing yourself in Varenna or Bellano in a Villa Vista Lago apartment."
