Lake Como

Lake Como, in Lombardy, is an upscale tourist area celebrated for its spectacular scenery at the foot of the foothills of the Alps. The shape of the basin resembles an inverted "Y", with three slender branches converging at Bellagio. At the end of the southwestern one is Como, known for examples of Renaissance architecture, at the end of the south-eastern one is Lecco famous for the novel "I Promessi Sposi - The Betrothed" and at the top Colico. In the center of the lake there is Varenna (the pearl of the lake) and Bellano known as the "town of artists" and named one of the most beautiful villages in Italy "Borghi più belli d'Italia". Before reaching the lake, the waters of the Pioverna stream flow through a rocky gorge, creating a breathtaking and evocative natural spectacle known as the Orrido di Bellano (Bellano Gorge). Don’t miss the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Lezzeno, where a miraculous event occurred—tears of blood were seen streaming from a Marian image kept in a chapel. Bellano is also a key stop along the Sentiero del Viandante (Wayfarer’s Path), an ancient trail that winds through the woods and has been used for land travel for centuries. Before flowing into the lake, the waters of the Pioverna torrent travel through an inlet between the rocks, creating a fascinating and evocative spectacle. A popular destination is also the Sanctuary of the Madonna di Lezzeno, built in 1688 after the miracle of blood tears from a Marian image kept in a chapel. Bellano is also the destination of the "Sentiero del Viandante", an ancient road that crosses the woods and which over the centuries has been used for land connections. Events steeped in history and charm are the fish festival in July where it is possible to dine among the festive districts of the town and the fireworks display of the feast of the patron saint SS Nazzaro and Celso. On January 5 of each year the extraordinary "Pesa Vegia" festival, a mixed festival between the sacred and the profane which recalls, with costumes from the 1500s, the Spanish domination and the request of the people of Bellano to the Governor of Como to maintain the metric system. The town is at its best (a must see, highly recommended). Possible routes of stay: excursions on the lake by boat, waterfalls of Bellano, visiting medieval villages and neighboring fishermen (Corenno Plinio and Varenna), Piona Abbey, walks along the historical path of the "Viandante", the famous route Manzoniano Betrothed.

The Sanctuary of Lezzeno (Bellano)

The Sanctuary of Lezzeno rises above a panoramic hill overlooking the lake. It has an elegant Baroque and, on the right side, there is the bell tower. Inside there’s a single nave richly decorated with marble (including the black marble of Varenna), stuccos and paintings. The sanctuary is surrounded by a large square accessible using two staircases. The northern one is enriched by seven tabernacles with modern mosaics representing the Sorrows of Our Lady.

Corenno Plinio the "One Thousand Steps" Village

Piona Abbey

Piona Abbey has panoramic views over the Como Lake. It offers the opportunity to enjoy the tranquillity and the peace enjoyed by the cistercian monks who still live there nowadays. The church contains the remains of ancient frescos. To be seen is the charming cloister built in the transitional style from roman to Gothic. This is the reference point around the monastery, a place of silence and prayer. The chapter house, located on the eastern side of the cloister, is still used by the community of monks.

The traditional "Pesa Vegia" festival

The Pesa Vegia is the most important event on Lake Como in the winter season. It takes place every 5th of January. The people of Bellano have celebrated this event every year for over 4 centuries, even in times of war and deprivation, staging the procession of the Three Kings, the race of the "Pese" through the streets of the village and the bonfire on the pier. An event with over 400 years of history that is presented to visitors every year during the Christmas festivities. The town is at its maximum splendor (absolutely worth seeing, highly recommended).
