Sentiero del Viandante is one of northern Italy’s most scenic walking routes. It follows the eastern shore of Lake Como from Abbadia Lariana to Colico, passing through historic villages, chestnut woods, centuries-old mule tracks and natural terraces overlooking one of the world’s most beautiful lakes.

The Legend of the Hermit of Bellano
It is said that near Bellano, in an ancient cave hidden among the Viandante’s woods, there once lived a hermit known as “the wayfarers’ healer”. Stories tell of weary walkers being welcomed with mysterious herbal infusions gathered from the mountains, restoring strength to tired legs and calm to the spirit. Some local elders swear they met him; others say his spirit still watches over pilgrims on the trail. Truth or legend? Walk the Bellano–Dervio section and decide for yourself.
Dervio – Colico 5h Easy–moderate The Montecchio Fort and the medieval village of Corenno Plinio

Curiosities

  • In past centuries, some stretches were used by smugglers transporting goods between Lombardy and Switzerland
  • Along the way you’ll spot old fortifications, such as Fort Fuentes (Colico), built during Spanish rule
  • In places the path opens onto classic lake “postcard” views, including the outlook from the Sanctuary of Madonna della Punta (Dervio)
“Sentiero del Viandante is a unique experience—ideal if you’re looking for nature, history and quiet. Whether you walk it in one go or in stages, it will reward you with breathtaking views and the true essence of Lake Como. And if you decide to stay overnight, I recommend basing yourself in Bellano in a Villa Vista Lago apartment.”
