Bellano, Lake Como: Hidden Spots & Local Tips

The village of Bellano: hidden places and tips to delight your curiosity

Lake Como is full of captivating destinations, but Bellano is one of those hidden gems brimming with surprises. Often overlooked by tourists who flock to more famous spots such as Bellagio or Varenna, this village has a unique charm, rich in history, nature and secret corners waiting to be discovered.

Breathtaking landscapes: Bellano

The village of Bellano lies on the eastern shore of Lake Como and, for me, it is one of the most evocative and picturesque villages on the lake. With its cobbled streets, colourful houses and relaxed atmosphere, it is the ideal place for anyone seeking a break from everyday routine. Here, nature, history and culture intertwine, offering stunning views and a genuinely warm welcome.

The most atmospheric way to arrive is by boat, thanks to the public ferry service operated by Navigazione Laghi, which connects Bellano with other gems of the lake, such as Varenna and Menaggio. Bellano–Tartavalle Terme railway station is also well connected to Milan and Lecco, making the journey both convenient and scenic. If you prefer to travel by car, Bellano can be easily reached via the SS36 from Milan in about an hour and a half. Parking is available both near the town centre and along the lakeside.

The historic centre is filled with narrow lanes, small alleyways and staircases offering panoramic glimpses of the lake, as well as little shops, cosy restaurants, cafés and bars — perfect for a romantic aperitivo.

Hidden places and tips for an unforgettable visit

Orrido di Bellano: a natural spectacle

The Orrido di Bellano is a natural gorge carved by the Pioverna stream over millions of years. You can explore it comfortably along a suspended walkway that allows you to admire waterfalls, caves and impressive rock formations. It is a truly magical place, especially at sunset, when light plays with water and stone.

Secret tip: visit at sunset or after rainfall, when the light and the sound of rushing water create an even more evocative atmosphere. By continuing along the Sentiero del Viandante beyond the main tourist route, you can also reach quieter panoramic viewpoints.

Sanctuary of Lezzeno: peace and an incredible view

Just above Bellano, the Sanctuary of the Madonna of Lezzeno is an oasis of tranquillity. According to legend, the Virgin Mary appeared here to two young shepherd girls in 1688. It can be reached with a walk of about 30 minutes from the town centre and offers a perfect vantage point to admire the lake from above. A bus service is also available to reach this hamlet of Bellano.

Secret tip: bring a picnic and enjoy the view at your own pace.

Historic centre: a maze of alleys and stories

Bellano’s historic centre is a labyrinth of cobbled streets, stairways and colourful houses overlooking the lake. Wander without a fixed destination and let yourself be surprised by picturesque corners, such as the Church of Saints Nazaro and Celso, with its bell tower rising above the water, or the small artisan workshops where time seems to have stood still.

Secret tip: take a closer look at the former Cantoni Cotton Mill (I discuss it in more detail below).

Lakeside walkway: a romantic stroll

Bellano offers a charming pedestrian walkway that runs along the lake, perfect for a romantic stroll or for enjoying the scenery in complete relaxation. From here, you can take in breathtaking views of Lake Como, with the mountains reflected in its calm waters.

Secret tip: walk along the lakeside at sunset, when the lake is bathed in warm colours and the atmosphere becomes magical.

A touch of history: the Cantoni Cotton Mill and the Gavazzi Silk Mill

Founded in the 19th century, the Cantoni Cotton Mill was one of the largest and most modern industrial plants of its time. Located in Bellano and still visible today, it became a major centre for the production of cotton yarns and fabrics, which were exported throughout Europe. The decision to establish the factory in this area was driven by the presence of the Pioverna stream, which provided the hydraulic power needed to run the machinery.

The Cantoni Cotton Mill was not only an industrial enterprise but also a model of corporate welfare: it built housing for workers, schools, a nursery and even a theatre, improving living conditions for employees and their families. This forward-thinking approach helped to create a strong bond between the company and the local community. A clear example is today’s Piazza San Giorgio, where the houses were originally intended for mill workers.

The Gavazzi Silk Mill of Bellano, which no longer exists today, represented another cornerstone of the local industrial revolution. Silk mills were dedicated to silk processing, an activity that had already made Lake Como famous worldwide since the Middle Ages. With the advent of industrialisation, these facilities were modernised, introducing steam-powered machinery and more efficient production techniques.

Curiosity

The Pioverna stream, which powered the turbines of the Cantoni Cotton Mill, is the same stream that carved the Orrido di Bellano — a single thread linking nature and industry.

In summary: with its strategic location and peaceful atmosphere, Bellano is the perfect starting point for exploring Lake Como with a touch of authenticity. Whether you are a nature lover, a history enthusiast or simply looking to relax, this small gem on Lake Como has something special to offer.
