Between faith, stillness and local legends. My family has been from Bellano for generations, and today I’m taking you with me into the village’s very heart, where time seems to slow down. It happens as you reach Piazza San Giorgio and your eyes fall on the Church of Saints Nazaro and Celso, with its imposing façade and the black-and-white marble that catches the lake’s light. For us locals, this isn’t just a church: it’s a sign of identity, a place that tells eight centuries of faith, art and everyday life.
Built between the 12th and 13th centuries, Saints Nazaro and Celso Church is a jewel of Lombard Romanesque architecture, with a façade in local stone alternating with dark and light marble bands, giving it a simple yet imposing elegance.
The portal, framed by small columns and carved capitals, welcomes visitors with a sense of calm and quiet.
The two patron saints, Nazaro and Celso, are among Christianity’s earliest martyrs. According to tradition, their relics were found by Saint Ambrose in Milan in the 4th century, and from there their veneration spread throughout Lombardy.
In Bellano, the feast of the patron saints on 28 July is unmissable: solemn Masses, a procession and, in the evening, fireworks over the lake that light up the water like a living painting. It’s one of those moments when the whole village comes together, sharing faith, emotion and tradition.
💬 Local anecdote: as children we used to say that if you watched the fireworks reflected in the lake and made a wish, the saints would listen.
