Bologna & Gisazio: hidden viewpoints above Varenna

Bologna and Gisazio: Varenna’s secret balconies

When you think of Varenna, you picture the elegant lakeside promenade, villa gardens and visitors strolling and pausing by the Lake Como Varenna Gate and the Lovers’ Walk. But locals know that, with just a few bends uphill, you can discover two small treasures: Bologna and Gisazio. Bologna is a tiny hamlet above Varenna that feels suspended between lake and sky, while Gisazio—set among olive groves and vineyards—offers one of the most striking views over the central lake. A perfect viewpoint.

Bologna: the best view over the central lake

Bologna is the better-known of the two: a handful of stone houses and a low wall that opens onto an unforgettable panorama of Bellagio, Menaggio and Tremezzo.

Up here, time seems to slow down. Older residents say it used to be a summer refuge to escape the heat of the village below—and even today it’s the right place to “breathe” the lake without the crowds.

💡 Tip: sit on the lakeside wall and everything feels still. At sunset the water turns gold and the villages glow with thousands of lights reflected on the lake.

In the hamlet of Bologna above Varenna you’ll find old mule tracks once used by farmers, small terraced strips of olive trees and vineyards that hint at how important agriculture was to these communities—and, above all, a sense of peace that’s hard to find in the most touristy spots.

💡 Local secret: in spring the air is filled with floral scents; in autumn, warm colours make the view even more magical.

Gisazio: a hamlet suspended in silence

Gisazio is even more intimate: a tiny church, a few houses, and lanes that smell of woodsmoke and flowers. From here your gaze runs towards the Grigne and drifts across the deep blue of the lake. It’s a private, almost secret place where you hear only cicadas and the wind.

💡 Local secret: in Gisazio, sunset feels special because the light filters through the olive trees and paints the lake with golden reflections.

How to get there

  • 🚶‍♂️ On foot: from Varenna, follow the old mule tracks—around a 30-minute walk through olive groves and vineyards.
  • 🚗 By car: you can reach the area with small parking spots above the hamlets.

Your window onto the lake is up in Bologna above Varenna

Bologna and Gisazio aren’t just two little villages: they’re two privileged windows onto the heart of Lake Como. If you want to see the Lario through local eyes, you’ll find authenticity, silence and views that stay with you.

On my last trip to Lake Como I stayed at Downtown Varenna, in Varenna’s historic centre. Find out more on villavistalago.it
